3 Signs To Help You Know When It’s Time To Schedule A Heating Oil Delivery

If your fuel gauge is working properly and you remember to check it on a frequent basis, determining when to call the heating oil company to schedule your next delivery can be as simple as calling each time you get below a quarter tank. However, if you are like most people, you may find that with all the things life brings on a daily basis, remembering to check the fuel gauge on your oil tank can easily slip your mind. This is why it is so important for you to know what other signs to look for that can indicate your fuel is getting low and it is time to schedule your next delivery.

Your Boiler Reset

Most boiler systems come with a reset feature that is designed to protect the system from being damaged as a result of running with low fuel levels. If your fuel level drops below an acceptable level, the reset button on your boiler will be tripped. While you may be able to get your furnace back up and running temporarily by reigniting it, the reset button will continue to trip more frequently until you either run out of fuel entirely or fill your tank.

Air Coming Through Your Vents Has An Odd Smell

While heating oil offers a relatively clean burn, there is typically some sludge found in the bottom of oil tanks that is the result of oil that simply didn't burn completely. This sludge does not typically cause a problem in between annual maintenance appointments provided you keep enough heating oil in the tank at all times. When you allow the tank to get low on fuel, the sludge in the bottom of the tank can clog your supply lines and sprayers causing the system to produce a diesel-like odor that can be detected in the air coming through your vents.

Your Boiler Is Being Louder Than Usual

Just as sludge can find its way into your heating system when oil supplies are low, so can air. When air gets pulled into your fuel lines this can result in your boiler making a banging or roaring sound. If you notice that your boiler is operating louder than usual, this is typically a good indication that it is time to call and schedule a heating oil delivery.

A Bonus Tip

If your boiler runs out of fuel altogether, you can use diesel fuel purchased at a local gas station as a substitute until your heating oil company is able to make a delivery. This will get your boiler back up and running quickly so that your home or business does not get too cold. However, it is important to note that diesel fuel is should only be used in an emergency and for short periods of time rather than as a long-term solution to your heating oil needs.
