Don’t Neglect Those Baghouse Filter Changeouts and Inspections

A baghouse is an essential part of your facility's dust control system. Without a working baghouse, both the air quality indoors and the gas quality inside pipelines could be so bad as to adversely affect work and health. Like all filters, the baghouse can become clogged with dust over time, and you need to inspect and change the filters (or clean them, if they're reusable). Do not neglect this task. You might not think things are getting worse as time goes on because the change in air and gas quality can be very subtle.

Additional Exterior Pollution May Fill Up the Baghouse

Depending on what the baghouse is connected to, there could be exterior pollution that gets into the filter. For example, if the facility is located in an area that is inundated with wildfire smoke (even if the fire is far away, the air quality can be terrible where you are), particulate matter can get into the facility every time the door opens. If the baghouse is taking in air from the general work area, and is not connected specifically to a hose or pipe, it will have to clear out ash and particulates from the air. That's going to make the baghouse clog up very quickly.

Clogs Reduce Efficiency

If the baghouse becomes even a little clogged, that's going to reduce filter efficiency. It's the same concept that drives the need to change your air conditioning system's filter. Too much dust and air won't be able to get through. Nothing else will be filtered out. Instead, change or clean the baghouse so that it can take in air easily. How quickly the baghouse clogs up is individual to each facility, but eventually, you'll figure out a good inspection schedule. Until then, check it frequently so that you don't miss anything.

Too Much Dust Affects Everything Around It

If the baghouse fills up with dust, not only will the baghouse be much less efficient, but other equipment around it could be, too. The excess dust that isn't filtered out of the air through the baghouse can settle on nearby equipment and eventually slow that down as well in case the dust gets into gears and other moving parts. The simple act of making sure the baghouse is clean and not clogged goes a very long way toward keeping your facility running smoothly. If you and your staff don't have time to handle it, you can hire a service to take care of it for you.
